OCD and Contamination

Contamination OCD

The fear can ask you to give up hours to washing, cleaning, and checking, even when you care about ordinary cleanliness.

The Rules Keep Changing

One Wash Becomes Another

You may wash until your skin is sore, clean a surface again after someone touches it, or plan your day around what you cannot let into your home. Sometimes the fear is not about germs at all. A place, person, object, or memory can feel contaminated in a way no amount of scrubbing quite resolves.

Avoidance can make the world smaller without making the concern feel settled. You might ask others to follow rules they do not understand, then feel guilty about asking. Therapy can look at the pattern without dismissing reasonable hygiene or treating a feared situation as a test of character.

A Planned Approach

ERP Is Collaborative

Andrea is Certified in ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention). Together, you identify the situations that set off the alarm and the washing, cleaning, mental neutralizing, or avoidance that follows. The aim is to practice a different response to the OCD demand, not to prove that every surface is perfectly safe.

An exposure is planned and agreed upon. You discuss what would be clinically appropriate, what feels manageable, and what the exercise is meant to address before trying it. Telehealth can make it possible to discuss everyday settings in the places where the rituals occur. The pace is not determined by a checklist someone hands you.

Ways to Work

Consistent Care or Concentrated Time

Individual Therapy is $225 for a 50-minute session. Regular meetings leave space to understand the rules OCD has built into your routine, then reflect on specific practice between sessions. The goal is not to give you one more rule about how you should feel.

An ERP/OCD Intensive provides 180 minutes of concentrated therapeutic time for $1,500. A required $100 consultation comes first. The $100 is credited in full toward your first paid session or intensive. Andrea and you can consider whether a weekly rhythm or longer session better suits the current concern.

In Your Own Setting

Your Life Is More Than the Ritual

Contamination fears can shape who visits, where you go, and how much energy remains afterward. It can be difficult to explain why one object feels acceptable and another does not. In session, you can describe those distinctions without being talked out of them in a single conversation. Understanding the rules helps clarify where work can begin.

Care is available by secure telehealth when you are located in Texas, Colorado, or Idaho. The consultation offers space to discuss your pattern, the scope of the avoidance, and which treatment format may fit. You can ask about the approach before agreeing to any plan.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be told to stop washing immediately?

No. ERP work is planned together. You and Andrea discuss the purpose and pace of any practice before beginning.

Can contamination feel emotional rather than physical?

Yes. Some people describe a sense of mental contamination tied to a memory, person, or experience. The pattern can still involve rituals and avoidance.

Can this work happen through telehealth?

While you are located in Texas, Colorado, or Idaho, sessions can happen by secure video. Your everyday environment can be discussed as part of the plan.
